What Nursing Bra to Wear?
There are five main types of nursing bra you can buy. Which one you choose will be down to personal preference. The maternity bras listed below all have different ways of allowing a mother to breastfeed her child. So before you buy take a read and decide which type would be more convenient for you.
Like some conventional bras, one type of breastfeeding bra fastens between the cups at the front. This type is easy to open but perhaps a little to indiscreet for some mother.
Another type of nursing bra consists of zips, which sit under each cup. The advantage with this bra is that it quite discreet and easy to open and close. The zip-line can show through if the mother is wearing a tight fitting top.
The third type has a fastening (or small button) on the shoulder strap just above the cup, which can easily be unfastened to allow the cup down. Ensure you buy one that exposes the whole of the breast and not just the nipple, because the bra fabric left pressing on the breast may cause the blocked milk ducts. Again, the primary advantage of this maternity bra is ease of use.
You can buy breastfeeding bras made from a stretchy material. This is simple to use; you just pull the cup over the breast.
Finally, nighttime nursing bras are usually lighter in weight so as to make sleeping more comfortable. Instead of the usual ways of opening for feeding, this type of maternity bra might have a crossover front design so you can just slip your breast out.
Don't purchase your maternity bra too early in your pregnancy. Buy during the last month, as your breasts will be nearing their full size prior to breastfeeding your baby.
Buy as many nursing bras as you can afford and also the best quality you can afford. You don't necessarily need one for each day of the week but remember that you will be producing a lot of milk and will suffer from leaky breasts, so you will need to wash your maternity bras frequently.
It is important to buy the best quality you can afford. The main things to look out for are: cotton bras, as they will help keep you nipple cool and dry; good, wide straps that are going to give you lots of support, your breasts are going to enlarge and get a lot heaver so support is vital; test the fastening of the nursing bra making sure that it unfastens and refastens easily; the fastenings should not dig into you; Above all, make sure the bra is a good fit. Not only does a bad fitting maternity bra feel uncomfortable and not provide support, it may even interfere with milk production.
What follows is a quick review of nursing bras from popular brands. All the nursing bras reviewed are popular and rate higly in many consumer reviews.
Bravado nursing bras are extremely popular. Bravado maternity bras come in one of 3 ranges: the Bravado Original Nursing Bra, the Bravado Supreme Nursing Bra, and the Bravado Lifestyle Nursing Bra. The Original Nursing bra comes in 3 styles: Basic, Plus Style and Double Plus Style. Choosing which one suits you depends on whether you're expecting, have just given birth or have been breastfeeding for a while. If you're a new mother, then the Bravado Original Nursing Bra is the one for you. All bras are made from a super-soft cotton/spandex blend fabric, for maximum support and changing body shape. The Bravado Supreme Nursing Bra is for the fuller-breasted woman. Unlike other fuller-breasted bras the Supreme isn't under-wired but still holds its shape all day long. The bra also has a delicately embossed fabric, which is strong yet silky to the touch - clothing glides over it making breastfeeding very easy. The Bravado Lifestyle Nursing Bra is a very chic - dare I say sexy - bra with a low neckline, molded cups that give an incredibly smooth, seamless shape that is very flattering under tops and dresses. The neckline and strap have a very feminine lace edge and the nursing flaps open for full access for breastfeeding.

Sports Bras Are a Bust for Some
by Carol KrucoffAugust 09, 1999 in print edition S-4
Two women runners created the first one in 1977 by sewing together two jockstraps. One woman soccer player focused worldwide attention on the newest one by showing off her buff cups at the 1999 World Cup. In just over two decades, the sports bra has come a long way.
Not since 19th century feminist Amelia Jenks Bloomer designed baggy trousers to give women the freedom to participate in athletics has a piece of apparel so changed the shape of female fitness. Before the creation of the mother of all sports bras, the Jogbra, breast discomfort and embarrassment kept many women from participating in high-impact sports.
Today women run, climb, skate, play basketball and virtually every other sport, supported by the booming, $300-million-a-year sports bra industry, which has followed–or perhaps led–this explosive growth in women’s athletics. Yet despite the dazzling variety of colors and styles now available, most sports bras are still a bust for the typical American woman, who wears a size 36C.
“Almost universally, sports bras have not satisfied women who wear a C-cup or larger,” says Judy Mahle Lutter, president of the Melpomene Institute, a Minnesota-based research organization devoted to women’s health and physical activity. “Larger-breasted women, and women who are breast-feeding, often have trouble finding a sports bra that fits, feels comfortable and provides sufficient motion control.”
Inability to find a satisfactory sports bra keeps many women from exercising, says Lutter, whose organization recently ran a sports bra survey in its newsletter. “Some women report wearing two or three bras at one time” to get sufficient control, she says. Others bind their breasts with Ace bandages to minimize “jiggle” and wear T-shirts under their bras to eliminate chafing.
A woman who had breast reduction surgery said one of the biggest benefits was being able to exercise and swim without attracting stares. A study conducted last year by the American Council on Exercise reported that “a large majority of women experience breast discomfort while exercising” and either suffer in silence or avoid physical activity altogether.
When ACE commissioned a team of researchers from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse to evaluate five of the most popular sports bras designed for large-breasted women (size C-cup or larger) they found that some provided no more support than regular bras.
Part of the problem is that “the average bra size has increased from 34B just 20 years ago to 36C (plastic surgery and the use of birth control pills have been implicated),” notes an article about the ACE study, published in the organization’s journal, FitnessMatters.
Smaller-breasted women, who wear an A- or B-cup, typically fit well into compression bras, which press the breasts against the body. Their major dissatisfaction is the unflattering look.
*
Larger-breasted women, however, generally can’t wear compression bras and need the support found in another style of sports bra, which encapsulates each breast in a harness-like device. “Coverage is typically greater (in encapsulation bras), and straps and clasps of all sorts help to keep the breast in place,” the journal notes. But while there are “countless styles and fabrics to choose from” in compression bras, encapsulation models tend to come in fewer varieties and carry higher prices.
Indeed, the attention-grabbing sports bra worn by U.S. World Cup soccer heroine Brandi Chastain is available only in A- and B-cups, notes Nike spokeswoman Kathryn Reith, who is quick to add that the company’s new Inner Actives line also includes styles for fuller-busted women.
The highest-rated bra in the ACE survey was the Champion Action Shape Sports Top, one of more than 50 styles of sports bras made by Champion Jogbra, which is now owned by the Chicago-based Sara Lee Corp.

Fashion Tips: Choosing the Right Bra to Flaunt Your Assets
Men basically are visual creatures. They are turned on by what they see. More importantly , the teasing and expectation factor generate more thrills and excitement for him. It is the anticipation that whets his appetite and tantalize him.
There is such a wide range out there that one can simply get lost in it.
The trick is to find a bra that convey sensuality, femininity and class. You shouldn't pick those that convey an image of slutishness or which give an image of a whore.
Men are easily turn on the female form . Buy a bra that bares as much skin as possible and yet teases him by covering your assets.
You want to pick one that men can find it easy to take off. Imagine his frustration during your most intimate moments and he is stumped by your bra. Get a bra that unhooks at the back rather than the front. Both you and your lover can take it off in double quick time.
Pick a bra which is soft so that he can feel your bosom beneath the bra and this is a merely a preview of what is to come.
Men love lacy bras as these convey a softness and delicacy. Other soft fabrics include cotton , silk and satin.
Choose Lycra/Spandex as they stretch and hug the body and shows off your curves. Lycra / Spandex retain their shape better too. Microfiber fabric is made from ultra-fine man-made fibers. It is super lightweight , feels silky and makes undergarments mold to the body making you look sexier than ever.
Bra with underwire will also give support to your breast and give a fuller bosom.
Buy bra with adjustable straps so that there will be no slack on your back. By tightening the straps the bra cups can be pulled upwards giving you the appearance of bigger and perkier breasts.
Consider wearing demi bra that covers your breasts partially. It's a great idea as it allows you to wear low cut dresses or blouses and maybe unbutton one or two buttons on your shirt.
For women who want to boost their assets, consider getting a push up bra to drive your man crazy . It makes your cleavage fuller and ample. Another bra that does the same trick is the padded bra. Some bras may be filled with liquid to enhance your assets. Consider these gel filled bras.
We come next to colors. I find black, pink and red very seductive and desirable.
Also consider choosing skin tone colors. Men just go nuts thinking you have nothing on. Heighten the excitement further by going sheer. Furthermore, skin color bra lets you wear any outfit without the bra being obvious.
Your clothing can be used to further enchance the sexy appeal of your bra.
You can either wear a sheer white blouse with black bra or the other way around.
It will surely get him talking.
Expose part of your bra when you are wearing spaghetti or strappy dress or blouse. Celebrities like to show off their bra straps too. Shakira, Avril Lavigne and Jennifer Love Hewitt occasionally show them off. You can match the bra with your clothing or you can have contrasting colors with your clothing and match your bra with your lipstick or jewelry color too.

Figure 1Bra sizes are made up of two components:An even number that represents the back size (32, 34, 36, etc.) determined by the size of the torso. (see Figure 1, line A)
A letter that indicates the cup size (A, B, C, etc.) determined by the size of the breast itself. (see Figure 1, line B)
Important Note: Always measure while wearing your own best fitting bra.
To determine the back size(torso measurement):
Have someone stand at your side and bring a tape measure snugly around your ribcage, directly under the breast (see A in figure above).
Add 5 to the measurement (i.e. if "A is 29", the back size is 34)After 33 inches, only add 3 inches to the back measurement (i.e. if "A is 35", the back size is 38)
Verify the back size:Measure around the top of your breasts (the line above B in the figure above). This measurement should equal your back size calculation. For example if you measured 29 inches around your ribcage, the calculation is 29 + 5 = 34. The measurement above your breasts should equal 34.
Hints:
If the back size comes out to an uneven number, try the next size up. If you are in-between sizes or you are having difficulty finding the correct fit, then if you go up in cup size come down in band size or if you go up in band size come down in cup size. For example, if you are wearing a 42D, but it is a little too snug around the band, then you would move up to a 44C.
To determine the cup size(breast measurement):
Have someone stand by your side and bring a tape measure loosely around the fullest part of the bust (see B in figure above).
Subtract the back size from this measurement (ie. if "B" is 37" and the back size ("A" +5) was 34, the difference is 3"). This difference determines the cup size (see chart below).
The chart below should be used as a guide only. Sizes actually vary slightly from one manufacturer to the next. Goddess and Fantasie of England are the most generous in the cups. The Right Bra for Your Prom Dress
With all the attention focused on selecting the right prom dress, finding the right bra to accompany that dress frequently takes a back seat. Prom dresses often require specialized bras for the right look, and your regular department store bra will likely not make the cut. If you’re not sure what type of bra you should be wearing on prom night, look for your dress style below to find the perfect accompanying bra. Then, check out our tips for determining your bra size (you may just be surprised by your true size).
Strapless or Bandeau: A strapless prom dress generally requires a strapless bra to accompany it. Look for a bra that includes boning in the band and the sides of the cups. The boning will support your breasts without the help of shoulder straps. You may also want to look for a bra with adhesive strips to help keep the cups in place.
Plunging Neckline: Plunging necklines are very sexy, but they can make wearing a bra difficult. For the right look in your dress, find a demi-cup bra with an underwire and extra padding to enhance your cleavage. Be sure to bring your prom dress in with you when you are trying the bra on. You do not want any bra cups peeking out from under your dress on the big night.
Backless: If you are wearing a backless prom dress, you will need to look for a strapless, bandless bra. Because the bra has no straps or band to support your breasts, be sure that it contains adhesive tabs on the cup linings to secure it. A bandless bra will offer you support without ruining the image of your naked back.
Silhouette Hugging: If your dress hugs curves in all the right places, you might want to wear a full-torso bra. Look for a bra in a thick, tight microfiber that extends all the way from your breasts to your hipbones. The bra will smooth out your curves and keep you looking sexy and slender in your dress.
Halter Neck: A halter prom dress requires a halter bra for the right appearance. Look for a bra with adjustable straps that extend around your neck, rather than over your shoulders. The bra straps should be thin enough to slide under the straps of your dress for a completely hidden look. Although it's sometimes immediately obvious that a bra you're trying on doesn't fit right, there are less obvious signs that a bra is doing absolutely nothing for your shape, or worse, is doing lots of things wrong. Even a bra that 'feels right' initially may not be giving you proper support or enhancing your shape.
Familiarity with our Perfect Fit checklist will help you choose bras that flatter and support. Take a few minutes to understand what a perfect fitting bra should look and feel like, and to recognize whether your bra is the wrong size for you.
Here is a checklist of what to look for, or download it here for printing (PDF format requires Adobe Acrobat, available here).
Smooth fitting cupsIf you don't fill out the cups, you need a smaller size. If you are "overflowing" the cups, try a larger cup size or a style with a fuller cup design. The edges of the cups should also lie flat against your breast. If there is a gap (especially with padded bras), you should go down a cup size.
Center panel lays flat against your breastbone. If it does not, this could be a sign that your cup size is too small, or the panel is not large enough to accommodate the separation between your breasts. Note: Minimizers tend to not rest against the breastbone, and this is fine.
The bottom of the bra in the front and back is parallel to the floor or slightly lower in the back. The lower edge of the band should anchor below the shoulder blades. The lower the back fits, the better the support.
Straps stay put and don't dig into your shoulders. Consider a different bra style with straps closer together if straps keep falling. A smaller band size should reduce the strap's strain on your shoulders.
Cup fabric should be stableThe fabric should give support as well as a good breast shape.
An underwire should encircle your breast. It shouldn't poke, protrude or pinch.
Good breast upliftThe apex of your breasts should be mid-way between your shoulders and your elbows. Uplifted breasts look more youthful and give a slimming appearance.
Breasts face the front and do not sag or fall to the sides. This breast position allows you to freely swing your arms.
A finger can be run under the front band. Your bra should be snug, but not too tight. If it's tight, you need a larger band size or a looser hook placement.
Feels comfortable when sitting. Our ribcages tend to expand when we are seated. If you're not sure your band is big enough, this quick test will answer your concern.
Consider an alteration. Still not the perfect fit? We alter our clothes for a better fit, why not a bra? One woman in our office really measures to a 35 band size. She therefore buys a 36D and has a dart put in at the sides.
An important point when zeroing in on your correct bra size is that when you try on a bra and go one cup size larger, you are keeping the band size the same and increasing your bust line by 1". However, when you go up a band size (keeping the cup size the same) you are increasing your band circumference by 2" AND increasing your bust line circumference by 2" as well. The point here is that changing a cup size within a band size is fine-tuning your bra size. Changing a band size is a much more significant size change.
